What activities
are Time Bank members involved in?
The concept of a time bank (TB) is based on the idea
that everyone in the community has a skill or talent
to offer. It coordinates the exchange of these skills
by putting people in touch with others interested in
them. For every hour spent helping someone, 1 time credit
is earned, these can then be spent on any of the skills
offered by other members. Credits earned can be used
immediately, saved up or even donated. All ages and
abilities are welcome. Apart from the direct help provided,
members benefit by getting to know others from their
local area.
Exciting opportunities have been taking place at Caxton
House TB with our exchanging activities proving to be
very successful. A swap shop facility, where members
can exchange goods as well as time credits, is growing
in popularity so now is definitely a good time to swap!
Thanks for all the contributions from our members. We
also assisted the Hilldrop sewing class with materials
donated to the swap shop by a small clothing manufacturer.

We have members
offering help in a wide variety of areas that
include filming, recycling, gardening, research,
shopping, guided walks, languages and befriending
skills as well as a number of career development
subjects like computer training, book keeping
and marketing and media relations. Opposite:

Our TB
members Karen and Sue have been organising walks on
a fortnightly basis for most of this year so far. They
are open to all time bankers (and their friends) from
around the capital and cost about 3 – 3.5 hours
each. This is a great opportunity to meet new members
and have a healthier life style. Below: Highgate Village
Walk. |

Member Lidya
has gained a work related computer qualification
through training provided under the Time Bank
scheme. She is now qualified and is currently
looking for employment. Lidya would like to spend
her Time Credits on learning the piano. If anyone
is able to offer her lessons, please get in touch
with John at Caxton House TB. Opposite: TB member
Lidya whit her IT qualification. |

The
Volunteer Celebration Event held at City University
on 22nd February 2007 was organised by The Islington
Volunteering Association, a networking organisation
that aims to bring together everyone from the
voluntary, public and private sectors within Islington.
The event went really well for the Islington Time
Bank Network (ITBN) with Inga Rowlinson-Lauder
of Hilldrop TB being named as ‘Islington
Volunteer of the Year’. Three other Islington
TB members also collected certificates in recognition
of the value placed on their work for the project.
Congratulations go to Val Dunmow of Caxton House
TB, Joan Hewitt of Hilldrop TB, and Kaaren Morris
of Upper Street TB. Opposite: Member Val at the
volunteer celebration event. |
